Hip Pain Treatment in Fort Collins, CO

Pinching in the squat, deep glute pain, outside-hip pain when you run or sleep. Hips respond fast when you treat the joint and then train the range you restore.

The short answer

Hip pain in active adults usually comes from a mismatch between available joint range and the demands of squatting, running or grappling. Tier 1 Performance & Rehab in Fort Collins uses Functional Range Assessment to measure what the hip can actually do, hands-on care to restore motion, and loaded end-range training so the new range is controllable under real weight.

Serving Fort Collins, Loveland, Timnath, Windsor and Wellington, CO.

01 — What it is

Hip pain, and how to tell that's what you have

Signs you're dealing with this

  • A pinch in the front of the hip at the bottom of a squat
  • Deep glute or groin ache after sitting or training
  • Outside-hip pain when running or lying on that side
  • Clicking or catching as the hip flexes
  • Hip stiffness that limits depth, stride or guard retention

What's actually causing it

  • Restricted hip rotation or flexion range, so the pelvis and low back compensate
  • Glute and deep hip strength below your sport's demands
  • A squat, stride or guard position that exceeds your available range
  • Sudden increase in running, sprinting or mat volume

02 — Our approach

How we treat Hip pain at Tier 1

  1. Measure the joint

Functional Range Assessment of hip rotation, flexion and extension, plus strength testing and a look at your squat and gait.

  2. Restore motion

Joint capsule work, soft tissue treatment and targeted mobilisation to open the range the hip is missing.

  3. Own the new range

Loaded end-range training — the FRC approach — so the range you gain is usable under load instead of temporary.

  4. Reload your sport

Squat depth, stride and mat positions rebuilt on the new range, with a maintenance routine that keeps it.

What to expect, week by week

  • Weeks 1–3

Range up, pinching down, clear mobility homework.

  • Weeks 4–10

Loaded end-range work plus squat or run progression.

  • Weeks 10–16

Full depth and volume, held with a short daily maintenance routine.

Programs here run 8 to 16 weeks depending on how long the problem has been going on and the load you need to return to. These are typical ranges for active adults, not a guarantee — you get specific goals and a target program length after your first assessment.

03 — FAQ

Hip pain: common questions

Written as direct answers so Google and AI assistants can quote them.

Why does my hip pinch when I squat?+

Most often because you are asking for more hip flexion or rotation than the joint currently has, so the tissue at the front gets compressed. Restoring and then loading that range resolves it in most cases.

Will stretching fix my hip?+

Passive stretching alone rarely holds. Range you can control under load does, which is why the mobility work here is loaded rather than passive.

What is Functional Range Assessment?+

A joint-by-joint measurement system for capacity and control. It shows exactly which motion the hip is missing, so the plan targets that instead of generic stretches.

Can hip pain cause low back pain?+

Yes. When the hip does not move, the low back and pelvis take the motion instead, which is why we assess both.
